How to Recreate This Look: Dapper Steampunk Gentleman

How to recreate the look of this Steampunk man dressed in costume. his clothing includes waistcoat, hat, goggles, sunglasses, coat, tie, pin, belt and trousers. DIY
Cosplayer: Nick Page / Photographer: Bill Anderson

Do you want to recreate this look? It has been one of our most popular men's fashion inspiration posts, so we're not surprised. We think it stands out because the focus is on the fashion, not the gadgets and accessories. It's a formal look, but with a bit of an edge. So lets break Nick's outfit down.

shop this look: steampunk mens clothing
If you have a pair of slim fit pants in your closet, give those a try. Even black skinny jeans work here--the important part is that they be fitted. That tight fit gives the outfit a hipster/rock and roll vibe, which is what makes it stand out from the more traditional Victorian men's looks. Try these slim fit chinos, or these extreme skinny fit Levi 519 jeans. If you're a little more adventurous, wear a pair of slim fit gothic brocade trousers like these.

A white pleated front tuxedo shirt is next. Notice that Nick's shirt has a "winged collar"--this is known as the more formal collar style and it was very popular in the early 1900s. Here's a tuxedo shirt nearly identical to Nicks, but you can also venture out into other tuxedo styles, like this high collar Victorian version, or this club collar version. The club collar originated at Eaton college in the late 1800s, so it's also known as the "Eaton collar".

Nick's waistcoat has a bold pattern, but the brown colors keep it toned down. This brocade waistcoat is a nice choice. If you're looking for something with more vibrant colors and patterns, check out the waistcoats in the etsy shop, DASOWL. Add a brown ascot like this, or make you life easier with this version that's already been tied! We love the subtle paisley pattern.

The jacket is a tuxedo jacket with tails (aka 'tailcoat'). You could opt for this traditional tux jacket and swap out the black buttons for these brass buttons, or try this cotton velvet costume version. Even better, check out this tailcoat by Bleeding Hearts with a split swallow tail. It will put the PUNK in your Steampunk outfit.

Tall Abe Lincoln style top hats are very common in Steampunk fashion, so it's nice to see Nick in a shorter version. This wool felt short top hat is a great choice, with a pair of goggles like these slung casually around it.

Nick's round sunglasses give a rock and roll vibe, but they are fairly historically accurate. Round eyeglasses were the popular style in the 19th century, although sunglasses were more of an American thing than a British trend. Here's an affordable pair on Amazon. You should also be able to find a pair at your local sunglasses shop.

To finish off the look, add some pins to your jacket (we think Nick's crucifixes--like this one--look cool, but anything works here, like this gothic victorian inspired cross or this Gear Wing pin). Look through your old jewelry, make some yourself, or take a deep dive into Etsy to find something really unique. Add a pocket watch, winding the chain around the buttons of your waistcoat before tucking it in a pocket, as Nick has done.

You can add on more accessories or props, but we think less is more in this situation. Let the fashion be the focus, not the props and gadgets.

How to Recreate This Look: Wild West Steampunk

Woman wearing western cowboy/cowgirl clothing in the style of the wild wild west steampunk genre (aka weird west sci fi). Corset, hat, boots, pants, blouse, gun.
Cosplayer: Amy Wilder / Photographer: Jimmy De Photography

Do you want to recreate this look? We love the mix of black and brown leather, and her badass Steampunk Cowgirl vibe! Luckily recreating it is easier than you think. You probably already have a plain white button up shirt in your closet. Pair it with tight-fitting jeans or other pants--you can even wear leggings. If your closet's no help, try this simple white button down shirt, or keep your shirt looking cleanly tucked in with this bodysuit blouse. We like these jeggings-fit skinny pants in dark mustard (or rust) or these high waisted skinny jeans in gold or camel.

If you already own some knee-high black boots, or any western style boots, see how those look. Otherwise, we love these Buckle Slouch Boots (also sold here), these Top Moda Boots with a lace up back, and these Rocket Dog Cowgirl boots.

Amy's corset was made by Brute Force Studios and is for sale here. If you're looking for something cheaper, here's a similar corset on Amazon. Browse more styles in the underbust corset section of our corset guide.

You can pick up Amy's genuine leather hip bag from JungleTribe's etsy shop here. You can also get a cheaper knockoff like the Steel Master hip bag, but don't forget that you get what you pay for-- they may say they're "genuine leather" but at that price point, they are a cheaply made leather-like plastic that won't last as long as the real one from JungleTribe.

This cowgirl has a sexy steampunk vibe, so ditch the traditional cowboy hat for one made of leather. We like this Down Under Leather Hat, BC Australian Leather hat, or the Sterkowski Cattle Cowboy hat from amazon. You should also check out the selection of leather cowboy hats on etsy

Amy's leather choker and matching arm cuffs (sometimes called an upper arm/bicep cuff) are from BruteForceStudios, but unfortunately they weren't available when this post was written. Luckily there are a lot of other options on Etsy, like the ones from MyFunkyCamelot and LongShotLeather.

Finally, the pièce de résistance: the gun! Sure, you can search Etsy for steampunk rifles (we've seen some cool ones from LucidVisionPropShop, DarkHaunt, SteampunkTakeover, and WulfgarWeapons), but isn't it more fun to make your own? Head on over to our tutorials page, where we've compiled links to all the best steampunk tutorials. In addition to the weapons section, make sure you also check out tips & techniques.

How to Recreate This Chic, Casual Steampunk Outfit

This is a great Steampunk outfit. We like that it comes off as casual and effortless, but with enough visual interest to stand out. It's also flattering for any body type.

Tutorial on how to recreate this casual, chic, easy, sexy Steampunk outfit. Striped boatneck top, striped underbust corset, leather harness with LED light, cyclops monocle, black high low hem showgirl skirt, black leather boots, brown wide leather belt. Women's Steampunk clothing
Photo: Sean Tice

The accessories keep this look interesting, adding just the right amount of edge. This woman is no shrinking violet; she is a badass.

Tutorial on how to recreate this sexy, casual, chic, feminine steampunk outfit. striped shirt, striped underbust corset, leather chest harness with LED light, cyclops monocle, pocket watch. Women's steampunk clothing and fashion tips.
Photo: Sean Tice

This outfit is easy to recreate once you break it down piece by piece. You don't have to copy everything. Change a few pieces to put your own spin on it.

The model's shirt is a tan and white striped boatneck fitted top with 3/4 length sleeves. A variety of different colors would work here, from black and white striped to red and white striped. Blue or gray would look good, too. If you want something a little sexier, try a fitted off the shoulder top:

Harnesses are versatile accessories. You can wear them over almost anything, and they instantly add a sexy edginess. The model in the photo is wearing the LED Light Harness, but her outfit would look just as good with an arm wrap or cleavage harness:

Corsets are popular in Steampunk fashion because they can give any woman a sexy hourglass shape, and that was the desired silhouette during the Victorian era (not much has changed). The model's vertical striped underbust corset provides a striking contrast to the horizontal stripes of her shirt. The corset's buckled straps create an added layer of texture:

The model's long black ruffle skirt is raised high in the front, a style known as 'high low hem,' derived from Victorian Polonaise overskirts (worn over layers of petticoats). The modern Steampunk style forgoes the petticoats in favor of showing off some leg:

How to Recreate This Look: Steampunk Vampire Slayer

Learn how to recreate this look: Woman dressed as a steampunk vampire slayer. her costume consists of a blouse, leggings with cutouts, underbust corset, belt, boots and crossbow. Her color palette is white, brown and black.
Cosplayer: Alexia Lovecraft / Photographer: Jose Fabri

Do you want to recreate this look? Your first stop should be your own closet. Any white button up shirt will work here, as will most wide leather belts. If you don't have white blouse, we like the pleated bust on this white tunic, and the lace insets on the sleeves of this Victorian style blouse. This braided brown belt or this simpler version look very similar to the belt in the photo.

Alexia's brown striped corset has attached straps, which makes it look sportier than the traditional underbust corset--very important when you're running around slaying vampires. It's actually similar to a vest, which makes it more comfortable to wear, too. You can find Alexia's corset here, or browse the underbust corsets in our corset guide to find a similar style.

This next piece of the costume is very important, so please pay attention: you cannot look like a badass vampire slayer in a pair of plain black leggings! The showstopping element of Alexia's outfit is her gothic lace up leggings with lace thigh panels. Once again Amazon to the rescue-- you can buy her leggings here, or this similar style with a lace panel front & lace up sides. You should also check out this and this simpler style with oval lace panels on the thighs. Actually, don't make your final decision until you've also looked at these, these, these, and these. See? We told you it was important.

Slaying can really do a number on your hands, so don't forget the fingerless gloves. To stay true to Alexia's costume you can go with these white ones, but we prefer the tougher look of this black pair with rivets (also available in white), or this simpler style which comes in brown or black.

If you already own a pair of brown or black leather lace up boots, make them new again (and look like Alexia's) by lacing them up with some gold ribbon. You can also swap the brown ribbon for gold on this pair of brown faux suede boots, or replace the laces on this pair of brown lace up military boots.

Alexia's keeps her look sexy with a choker. We like this lace choker with gears, or this Victorian style choker with a cameo. She also wears a pocket watch around her neck like a long necklace. And it may be hard to see in this photo, she has a pair of goggles on her head like these.

If you'd like a similar steampunk crossbow, check out these listings on etsy, or browse our tutorials and then try making your own!

How to Recreate This Sexy Steampunk Outfit

This is one of many tutorials from our Recreate This Look series, but it is hands down the sexiest outfit we've tried to recreate. Our previous tutorials focused on Steampunk looks we'd describe as 'costumes' or 'cosplay', but we'd consider this more of an 'outfit'. This tutorial marks the start of plenty more Steampunk clothing/fashion ensembles that can easily transition into your regular wardrobe.
Black sheer sexy steampunk clothing and lingerie. Sheer black blouse, black corset, thigh high stockings, garter belt, knee high boots, bowler hat, goggles, harness and gun. Women's steampunk fashion.
While this outfit might seem a little risque to wear outside the house, there are some modifications that can make it completely workable in a public setting. Lets start by breaking this look down to its basic elements.

how to dress in a sexy sheer steampunk style; steampunk clothing for women
BLOUSE

It looks navy blue in the lighting of the photo, but this is actually a black sheer blouse. The high neckline's ruffled collar and ruffles at the wrist give it a Victorian feel. Wear it over a black lace bra for a sexy peekaboo look. Jawbreaker Sheer Long Sleeve Black Shirt:

Or try a sheer lace blouse, like one of these:

CORSET

The basic black underbust corset in this photo may not seem necessary (as it's hidden by the brown leather corset harness), but without it, the sheer blouse would move around beneath the leather harness. The black corset keeps it flat against the body, so the shirt doesn't start to lift and move between the straps of the harness. This isn't a focal point of the outfit (the leather harness is the piece you're trying to show off), so just choose a simple corset that won't distract from the leather harness. Sexy Black Underbust Corset:

Womens black steampunk underbust corset bodice

LEATHER HARNESS

The brown leather harness adds a rugged Steampunk feel to our all-black ensemble. Use the black underbust corset to prevent the sheer blouse from bunching up between the straps of the harness. Wide Strap Brown Underbust Harness:

For a plus size harness, check out this Tan Leather Harness by Hips & Curves:

UTILITY THIGH BAG

Sometimes referred to as a "leg bag" or "thigh bag", this accessory adds some interest to the outfit. It also draws attention to the model's bare thigh, adding some more sex appeal to the look. The best part? You won't need to carry a purse! This bag can be worn a variety of ways, Rock Leather & Vintage Thigh Bag:

womens thigh bag leg bag utility belt bag purse steampunk

This one comes in a variety of colors. You can replace the fabric belt strap with a leather belt for a more authentic look. Le'aokuu Leather Messenger Hiking Waist Hip Bum Pack Drop Leg Bag:

Steampunk utility bag thigh bag leg bag waist strap

BELT

In the photo, the model appears to be wearing 2 thin brown leather belts. This creates a little extra visual interest in the space between where the corset harness ends and the belt of the utility thigh bag begins. It also helps camouflage the black underbust corset. You can use 2 belts, or this Skinny Solid Leather Double Wrap Belt:

womens brown leather double strap wrap belt for steampunk costume

GUN

Don't forget to tuck in your gun! With all those straps and your utility thigh bag, who needs a holster? Colonel J. Fizziwigs Steampunk Collection Pistol

BOOTY SHORTS

The model doesn't appear to be wearing shorts in the photo. Depending on the event, black lace panties may be all you need. But if a little more modesty is required, here are a couple of ideas. Black Lace Ruffle Tanga Short:

womens black lace ruffle tanga short for sexy sheer steampunk outfit

For a little more coverage, try Slipshort Dance Shorts:

womens black dance shorts for sexy sheer steampunk cosplay

GARTER BELT

Nothing says sexy like a lace garter belt. Here's one with adjustable garter straps, Frisky Lace Garter Belt:

womens black lace garter belt for sexy sheer steampunk costume

STOCKINGS

Add some black sheer stockings, like these Sheer Pantyhose For Garters:

womens black sheer stockings lingerie for steampunk outfit

BOOTS

This sexy outfit is really all about the legs, so we continue drawing attention there with a pair of black leather over-the-knee boots. Keep them sleek and simple, like these Lustacious Women's Pointed Toe Thigh High Stiletto Boots:

womens black thigh high stiletto boots for sexy steampunk outfit

HAT

Continuing the Victorian influence, we top the look with a traditional black felt Bowler hat, also known as a Derby. Black Derby Hat:

GOGGLES

Finally, what is a Steampunk-inspired ensemble without the ubiquitous pair of goggles?  Sepia Cyber Goggles:
